Zyban and Wellbutrin

Zyban and Wellbutrin are both brand names for the generic drug, bupropion hydrochloride. The use of bupropion for smoking cessation stems from the fact that it can be used to decrease the effects of nicotine withdrawal. Both drugs were originally marketed for the treatment of depression and are available by prescription only. The effectiveness of bupropion for smoking cessation was discovered when smokers using it to treat depression also lost interest in smoking.

In 1997, both were approved by the FDA to be used as quit smoking aids. These drugs can also be combined with nicotine replacement therapies, i.e. patches, gum, etc.

How does bupropion work?

The mechanism, by which bupropion works is still being debated by researchers; the speculation is that the drug works on the neurotransmitters to reduce cravings and the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Zyban Side Effects

The main known bupropion side effects are:

  • shakiness
  • skin rash
  • dry mouth
  • confusion
  • anxiety
  • anorexia and
  • dizziness

Side effects that may go away during treatment include:
  • restlessness
  • agitation
  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • insomnia
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • change in weight
  • confusion
  • anorexia or
  • tremor

More serious side effects of bupropion include:
  • causing manic episodes with bipolar manic depression.
  • seizures when used in combination with: alcohol sedatives, cocaine, pre-existing epilepsy
  • eating disorders (anorexia nervosa or bulimia)

Because of the potential serious side effects, bupropion (like Chantix) also has to have a black box warning on its product insert. A black box warning means that medical studies indicate that the drug carries a significant risk of serious or even life-threatening adverse effects.

Cost of Bupropion

One tablet (150mg) should be taken for the first three days and two tablets (300mg) thereafter.

The treatment period should last from seven to twelve weeks.

The lowest cost that I found was about $150 for a month’s supply, so for the recommended three months that would be $450.
