Before we discuss quit smoking hypnosis, let’s first get an idea what hypnosis is and how it works in general.Hypnosis is concentrated relaxation so that it allows a person to relax, while focusing on a particular problem or desired result. During hypnotherapy, you relax your mind and body, moving past the guard of your conscious mind, to the subconscious mind. Your conscious mind edits and judges your thoughts and inputs. Your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between reality and imagination and will act like a sponge and absorb whatever you give it. Therefore, if you can get past the locked gates of your conscious mind to your subconscious mind, you can feed the subconscious “imagined reality”. So if you can imagine yourself as a non-smoker, your subconscious mind will accept that as reality. By reprogramming your subconscious mind you can change your actual behavior.
Three Keys to Success
- To really work well, suggestions must be reinforced by repetition. Most of the habits we want to change are deeply implanted in our subconscious mind and will not just “go away” with one set of suggestions. The hypnotic suggestion must be repeated on a regular basis until you notice a change. The needed repetition can be achieved by going to an hypnotherapist for several visits and/or using self-hypnosis tapes.
- Motivation is the second key to success. That is the motivation to change must come from within you and not because someone else wants you to change. So before you start to use hypnosis for your self improvement, you should get it clear in your mind why you want to change.
- Finally the third key to the successful use of hypnosis for personal change is believable suggestions. If you are going to accept a suggestion, your mind must first accept it as a real possibility.
Benefits of Using Hypnosis to Quit Smoking
There are two main benefits to using hypnosis to stop smoking: - First, quit smoking hypnosis is a great technique for learning how to control and/or reduce stress
- Secondly, by using the power of positive suggestion, quit smoking hypnosis has the ability to help you develop and strengthen your will and determination to succeed. It can also help effect a change in attitudes and beliefs toward smoking and thus help to enable the elimination of the physical dependency of the smoking habit.
On the Down Side
For some people, one of the problems with using hypnosis to stop smoking would be the fact that it takes a lot of repetition before the individual notices changes. I feel that one should realize that quitting smoking is a process and requires time and patience to be successful. Perhaps one of the reasons why so many people fail over and over when they try stop smoking is that they are looking for instant gratification and are not willing to do the work it requires to achieve their goal.For me, a more important short coming of hypnosis is that while it may be great at dealing with the psychological side of smoking addiction it does not address the physical side. The person would still need to address the very tough problem of nicotine withdrawal. (Of course, from my perspective, that would be to have a laser treatment when ready)
