Nicotine Patch

One of the most popular of the nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) is the nicotine patch. It was first introduced in the United States in 1992 and was available only by prescription but by 1996 the patch could be purchased over-the-counter.

How do nicotine transdermal patches work?

The patches, which resemble small square bandages, are designed to provide a steady controlled dose of nicotine throughout the day which lessens the nicotine withdrawal symptoms. However, unlike tobacco smoke and some of the other NRT’s this method takes the nicotine up to three hours to pass through skin layers and enter the blood stream.

The strength of the nicotine dose in the nicotine patches is reduced over time allowing the smoker to reduce their nicotine intake.

Side effects are related to:
  • the dose of nicotine
  • the brand of the patch
  • skin characteristics i.e. some people are more sensitive
  • how long the patch is used
  • how it is applied

What are some possible side effects?

  • skin irritation
  • dizziness
  • racing heartbeat
  • sleep problems or unusual dreams
  • headaches
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • muscle aches and stiffness
  • seizures

What is the cost ?

If following the recommended treatment of three months, the cost for the patches would be approximately $300.00 - $400.00.

Pros

  • As with all NRT's, this method allows the person to deal with psychological withdrawal before having to cope with the physical withdrawal of nicotine.
  • Since the user only has to apply one patch each day, it is very easy to use.

Cons
  • As with all the NRT’S there is the potential for many side effects.
  • After three months (or longer) still have to go through nicotine withdrawal.
  • The success rate after 6 months (without counseling) is only about 6%.
