Nicotine Lozenges




Nicotine lozenges come in the form of a hard candy which is slowly sucked on to release the nicotine into the body. The lozenge should never be chewed or swallowed because this would release too much nicotine into the bloodstream at once causing heartburn or indigestion,

Since the lozenges come in 2mg or 4 mg doses, the amount of nicotine can be can be adjusted to correspond with the amount of nicotine the person is used to and the slowly wean off. Each lozenge lasts 20 to 30 minutes and the daily dose should not exceed 20 lozenges.

One should not eat or drink for 15 minutes prior to using the lozenge or while it is in your mouth.

Side Effects of Nicotine Lozenges

There are a variety of side effects possible while using the lozenge and they could include:

  • soreness of the teeth or gums
  • indigestion
  • throat irritation
  • trouble sleeping
  • nausea
  • coughing
  • heartburn
  • hiccups
  • headache
  • flatulence


Cost of Lozenges

The cost, of course, will vary depending on the amount of lozenges consumed. It will be approximately $6 for 12 doses and up to $12 for 20 doses per day. So the monthly cost range will be between $180 to $360 per month with the recommendation of continuing for a few months.

Pros of Using the Lozenge

Some of the pros of using the lozenge include:

  • minimal withdrawal symptoms
  • easy to use
  • readily available - no prescription needed
  • dosage can be controlled throughout the day
Cons of Using the Lozenge

The cons of using the lozenge include:

  • many possible side effects
  • have to be careful not to chew or swallow
  • can’t eat or drink while sucking on lozenge
  • Must not smoke while using
  • after months of use, still have to quit cold turkey and go through withdrawal
  • very low success rate without counseling and behavior modification
