Natural Ways to Quit Smoking

How to Prepare for Your Laser Therapy Appointment

The following are suggestions of natural ways to quit smoking that I make to my clients to help them prepare for their cold laser treatment. But, they should help prepare anyone to quit smoking regardless of whatever method he/she chooses.

I choose natural ways to quit smoking because I feel a smoker’s body has been damaged enough by nicotine and the other harmful chemicals in cigarettes, that I certainly cannot recommend that they continue to put more harmful chemicals in their body.

Furthermore, the decision to quit cigarette smoking, in order to have a better chance at success, should involve lifestyle changes.

  1. List the reasons you want to quit- be very specific.
  2. Tell everyone of your decision to start a healthier life.
  3. Start a Smoker’s Journal. Note when you smoke and why. Do for a week.
  4. If you tried to quit before – why did you start smoking again?
  5. Start to cut back on smoking – the less nicotine in your body the easier quitting will be. Try to stop smoking ten hours before the session.
  6. Learn stress management techniques (such as exercise, yoga, tai chi, meditation) and/or deep breathing.
  7. Make lists of affirmations – put them around the house and work – say often. Louise Hay in her book, You Can Heal Your Life explains how and why affirmations work and lists several you can use.
  8. Read a book on behavior modification. One that I found helpful was Excuses Begone! by Wayne Dyer. (There is also a set of CD’s so you can listen to the book if you prefer.)
  9. Another of the natural ways to quit smoking would be to consider taking some natural products to help with nicotine withdrawal and weight gain.
  10. Determine what you spend weekly on cigarettes and then choose rewards for yourself after 1 week, 1 month, 6 months and 1 year. (If you smoke 1 pack a day in 1 year you will have saved $2700.

This would certainly go a long way for a wonderful vacation, big screen TV – you get the picture (no pun intended).

  11. Speaking of pictures, when you decide what you will save for, get pictures of them to put up around the house.
  12. Stock a survival kit of sugarless gum or candy, toothpicks, straws, fruits and vegetables, nuts, pretzels, etc.

There are good reasons behind everything that I’m suggesting you do. Let’s look at one of the recommendations and see why it’s important.

It is #5 on the list you just read. The one that suggests you should start to cut down on the amount of cigarettes that you smoke and to try and stop completely ten hours prior to coming. This is important because of the action of nicotine.

As you may know, nicotine is responsible for the addictive quality of cigarettes and the withdrawal symptoms. The amount of nicotine in your body; determines the length of time the withdrawal symptoms will last. This is due to what is called the half-life of nicotine.

Another factor, for starting to cut back on the amount of cigarettes prior to the cold laser treatment, is that you would be starting to retrain your subconscious. When you are smoking your subconscious becomes conditioned to expect nicotine at certain times, locations, activities or emotions. When you disrupt this pattern, you are reconditioning your subconscious and breaking these triggers. This also helps with withdrawal.

The reason for trying to quit smoking ten hours before your appointment is that it takes nicotine approximately 72 hours to leave your system. The laser treatment will help reduce your cravings and by already quitting for at least ten hours you would now have less time to get through before the nicotine is out of your body.

There is much more involved in this process but I hope you are getting the point that if you follow these natural ways to quit smoking, quitting will be easier and you will have a better chance at success.
