Methods to Quit Smoking

There are probably as many methods to quit smoking as there are smokers. In researching this topic on the web, not only, was I amazed at the variety of stop smoking methods, but also, that no one seemed to agree on which was the best way to quit.

Everyone seemed to have their own point of view. I don’t think I’ll be much better because I’m no different than everyone else - I also bring my own prejudices to the table.

So before I go further, let me give you an overview of what I believe.

  • Quitting smoking is one of the single most difficult things you will ever do. This is why you may have tried to quit smoking several times before.
  • Cigarettes contain thousands of chemicals and carcinogens. These chemicals are responsible for the bad side effects of smoking.
  • The reason for smoking cessation is to rid the body of all these harmful chemicals and to start healing the body.
  • Nicotine is probably the worst of the chemicals in cigarettes and is the main reason why smoking is so highly addictive.

Therefore, when considering which of the methods to quit smoking to choose, I feel one should want to eliminate all the dangerous chemicals as soon as possible. So for me, the more natural the approach i.e the approach that is the safest and without dangerous side effects is the best choice which is why I chose laser therapy when I quit smoking. But since everyone is different I will be covering numerous stop smoking methods.

First, I will cover some of the most widely prescribed drugs for smoking cessation which are Zyban, Chantix and Wellbutrin.

Next, I want to cover both the prescription and non-prescription nicotine replacement therapies that are available including:

  • Nicotine patches
  • Nicotine gum
  • Nasal sprays and nasal inhalers
  • Nicotine lozenges
  • Electronic cigarettes

Finally, I will do a review of some alternative approaches:

  • Acupuncture
  • Hypnosis
  • Low level laser
  • Herbal products

Having so many stop smoking methods, while it may be confusing at first, is actually a good thing. If you have tried to quit smoking in the past and were unsuccessful, it may be because you chose only one of ways to quit. What is needed is a combination; especially, one that includes support and behavior modification.Research has shown that the success rate without counseling and changes in behavior is greatly reduced.

Remember, when quitting smoking there is not a single 100% solution, except one…death.
