I have been smoking for the last 34 years and I have tried to quit smoking twice.
The first time I tried to quit was because my father died of heart disease and he was a life long, two pack a day smoker and I wanted to live longer than his 67 years. I used the patch at this first attempt but I obviously wasn't successful!
The patch, after the first week, made me feel very dizzy and as the weeks went on it got worse. I went to see a doctor because I thought I was either using too strong or not strong enough dosage. They told me to cut the patch in half or use a patch and one half. No matter what I did, after five weeks the dizziness was so bad I wasn't confident to drive.
I had smaller children at the time so I bought a pack of cigarettes and started again.
My second incentive to try to quit was the death of my brother, age 50 who died of a massive heart attached and died instantly.
So with two rude awakenings I got a prescription for Chantix. The side affects were absolutely horrible! I could handle the vivid dreams/nightmares but it wreaked my body equal to taking 10-15 laxatives! I couldn't sit at my desk at work for more than thirty minutes without having to run and I mean run to the bathroom!
If not for this, Chantix completely took the urge to smoke away, I just couldn't live with that side affect! I'm now 50 years old; I eat very healthy and I exercise regularly but I still smoke. I am still hopeful to quit one day without relying on help and just do it cold turkey!

Most smokers try to quit several times before they are successful. You have been smoking a very long time so stopping smoking for you will require more effort but it will be worth it given you health history!
I think your right to consider cold turkey because it seems that Nicotine Replacement Therapies and/or Drugs are not for you. But because of the difficulty you may encounter why don't you also consider something non-invasive to help you like acupuncture or especially Laser Therapy which helps with nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
