I wanted to stop smoking for years because I knew the harm I was doing to myself and those around me. But no matter how many pictures I saw of cancerous lungs, or how many times I heard that secondhand smoke carried the same risks for those around me as smoking did for me, I just couldn’t stop. I even smoked when I was pregnant.
Now, looking back, I can’t tell you the anguish I feel when I think about how I put smoking cigarettes above the safety of my kids.
My First Times Trying to Quit
I had to try several times to give up cigarettes before I found something that really worked. The first few times that I quit smoking were when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I gave up smoking for Lent. For 40 days, I didn’t smoke at all. However, when Easter Sunday rolled around I lit right up again. The sad part of this was that, at that time, I wasn’t as dependent on cigarettes as I would be later, so I could have stuck to quitting fairly easily. But since smoking was relatively popular, and the dangers were not yet known, I always went back to it. I could have saved myself a lot of grief if only I knew then what I know now and had not ever started again. I wouldn’t have had to experience the anguish of failing time after time or, for that matter, spending thousands of dollars to damage my health and the health of those around me. However, as the popularity of smoking started to dwindle and more information about all of the risks started to emerge, I began to consider quitting more seriously.
My Addictive Personality
I was beginning to think about all the reasons I SHOULD quit, but I really wasn’t ready to stop. This is probably due to my addictive personality and my dependence on nicotine both of which I would have to overcome. Reason alone was not enough to overcome my addiction. I was going to need some help. Let me give you a few examples to explain what I mean: - One time I was an exhibitor at a country fair and across the aisle was a smoking cessation booth with an actual cancerous lung in a jar. I remember looking at that ugly, black, diseased lung while I just kept smoking. It had no impact on me at all.
- Another time, I had a horrible case of bronchitis (What a surprise!) and a fever of over 103 degrees. I really was totally out of it but somehow I dragged myself to the doctor. I wanted to get an antibiotic so the pain in my lungs and the cough would ease enough so I could have a cigarette.
DOES IT GET ANY WORSE THAN THIS? I know that for some people, telling them about the dangers of smoking is enough for them to quit smoking. I am not that strong.

My Search for an Effective Method to Quit
However, despite all this, I would, from time to time, try to quit. I had trouble choosing which method to try. I immediately ruled out: - Acupuncture. Years ago, no one knew much about it and I'm not crazy about needles.
- Hypnosis
. I knew several people who had tried it and none had been successful. - Cold Turkey
. Outside of those few times during Lent, I could never stick with it again long enough to get through withdrawal. (Drugs like Chantix and Zyban had not been developed yet.) So that left Nicotine Replacement Therapy. The most popular methods of these were the patch and the gum. Since I couldn’t be chewing gum at work, I decided that the patch was my only option. As long as I had some dosage of the patch on, I was able to not have a cigarette. But when I got to the end of the treatment, since there was still nicotine in my system, I had to go cold turkey and deal with withdrawal symptoms anyway. I was bummed out because I had failed, but also because I had blown over $400 trying and wasted weeks while I was on the patch. At the time, I didn’t realize that it wasn’t just that I had failed but that the method I had chosen had failed me. After several more years, I psyched myself up to try again. I went back to the patches for all the same reasons mentioned above and now they were less expensive because generics were now available. I thought I was more dedicated this time and was determined to get through withdrawal. Didn’t get the chance to find out because now I was allergic to the patches and kept getting a rash no matter how I moved them around. I gave up trying altogether until my doctor suggested that I try Chantix. Thank goodness she had some samples because it wasn’t covered by my insurance and Chantix is very expensive. It can be over $500 for the treatment and has side effects so severe that the FDA requires a black box warning on the package. But again, after weeks of taking the pills, I couldn’t handle the withdrawal once I had to stop taking them. So that was it- I finally gave up! I knew the risks of smoking but was so discouraged - I didn’t want to fail again. I was tired of wasting time and money on ways that didn’t help. Most quit smoking methods only have 5-20% success rate so chances of succeeding are slim. Why even try? I resigned myself to becoming an outcast, of having to sneak around to have a cigarette, and, most of all, to being unhealthy. Besides, despite all the negatives of smoking, there were many times during the day that I found smoking enjoyable. What’s better than that first cigarette in the morning or the one after dinner? This is a very depressing place to be but I didn’t see any alternative.
Light at the End of the Tunnel – I Find Out About Laser!
By now, I had really given up. The methods that I had tried hadn’t worked and I just couldn’t deal with failing again. I was not going to try anything else. I couldn’t face the frustration and guilt 1 more time. Then one day, I learned about a new method to quit smoking while I was talking to a co-worker. She was telling me how she had been a smoker for over thirty years and, just like me, she had tried several times to stop smoking but had never succeeded. She also had experienced the overwhelming sense of failure of having such a dangerous habit and not being able to do something about it. But finally quit after years of struggling and feeling like a failure when she had had a cold laser treatment. I had never heard of this so I asked her to explain further. She told me: - How quick and easy low level laser therapy was – that usually only one, 1 hour session was all that was required.
- That cold laser therapy was completely safe and there were no known adverse side effects.
- The cost of a laser treatment wasn’t more than smoking for 1 month.
- Best of all that IT WORKED!
In my head I thought, “Oh come on – get real - nothing could be that easy – I've been trying for years…” So I just filed the information away and did nothing with it. In the course of my work as a Dental Hygienist, I have to question my patients about their medical histories. One of the things we note is whether or not someone is a smoker because smoking not only puts them at risk for oral cancer but also for gum disease. I began to note that more and more of my patients were mentioning how they had stopped smoking and they had done it with laser therapy. Could there really be something to all of this? Finally, I decided that smoking was just too bad for my health and I needed to try one more time. I put away my fears of failing yet again and I made an appointment …
I Had a Treatment
To get to the closest laser therapy office I had to drive over 1 hour. When I arrived I really didn’t know what to expect. Yes, people had told me they had had a laser treatment but hadn’t told me what to expect. I knew it was safe but did it hurt? After all, the only lasers I had seen were the ones in spy or sci-fi movies. The laser practitioner reassured me that I had nothing to worry about so I decided to give it a try. I laid down on a couch in the office and he proceeded to do the laser treatment. What a relief! I felt absolutely nothing except a growing feeling of contentment and relaxation as the treatment progressed. About 20 minutes later, when the treatment was over - it was as if someone had flipped a switch and turned off my desire to smoke. For the first few days after - forget about craving a cigarette – I didn’t even think about cigarettes! I felt as if I were on a high which I now know is due to the release of endorphins in the brain – kind of like a runners high. And best of all, I wasn’t hungry nor did I have any food cravings either! I was ecstatic about this especially since I had put on a total of 60 pounds after the last two times that I had tried to quit. This feeling lasted for about 3 - 5 days (about the time it takes nicotine to leave the body). Over the next couple of days, the habit part of the addiction kicked in and I wanted a cigarette at certain times of the day. This is when I should have requested another session to make things easier but I decided to stick it out rather than make that long drive again. It was much easier than before to fight this addiction that had kicked my butt previously and I have made it through for 2 years strong now!

I Want to Share the Experience with Others
Because I was feeling so awesome for finally beating my addiction after 40 years of trying, I wanted to learn more about cold laser therapy so I could help other smokers experience the same thing. I had struggled for so long and had failed so much that I didn’t want others to go through the same punishment and quilt of failure. I wanted them to have an easier time with quitting. My desire to help was so strong that I spent thousands of dollars for equipment and training even though I had no idea whether or not I would ever recoup my money. My passion to help people free themselves from the dire consequences of smoking was too overwhelmingly for me not to try. So I have been helping others quit smoking, for over two years. I would also like to help you quit smoking. Not only do I want to help you stop smoking but I want to make it an even better experience than the one that I had. Therefore, at CT Laser Therapy, I: - Do the treatment in the comfort and convenience of your home or office.
Want to be sure that you get the best price, so - I give $100 off the going price of a session.
- Offer a free booster treatment (valued at $100.)if the withdrawal symptoms are getting too strong and you ever feel you want one (within 6 months and you have not returned to smoking)
So if you are like I was, discouraged and afraid of failing again, experience the joy of being free from cigarettes – spending your money on the things you love and enjoy, and knowing that you are living healthier everyday. I know what you’re going through- remember that I’ve been there, struggled and now my life is fantastic because I no longer live with the guilt of failing or as a slave to cigarettes and smoking. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns or to schedule a consultation. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you. What would you buy with an extra $100,000? (You might be spending this on cigarettes)Have you ever stopped and figured out how much money you will spend over the years if you continue to smoke? After I had stopped smoking, I sat down and tried to estimate about how much I had spent on smoking. I came up with a figure of over $30,000 and this is low by today’s standards because when I started, cigarettes were less than 50 cents a pack. Now, with cigarettes over $7 or $8 a pack, those same 40 years will cost you over $100,000! (Assuming the price of cigarettes doesn’t continue to rise.)
FAQ’s
What is Laser Therapy? Laser therapy is a treatment in which a low level laser (LLL) is applied to various acupressure points depending on the desired result. LLL is being used for a variety of conditions including: - Acne
- Pain management
- Weight loss
- Spider veins
- Smoking cessation.
What happens during a treatment? While the client is comfortably reclining in a chair, the laser is applied to various acupressure points on the hands, face and ears. It is believed that the specific points used stimulate the release of endorphins in the brain which helps overcome the physical and emotional symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. What are the Risks and Does It Hurt? There are no known risks for most people. The strength of the cold laser is much less than a surgical laser so unlike a surgical laser it can’t burn, cut or harm the skin therefore there is no pain associated with treatment. A few medical conditions such as epilepsy, pregnancy, undergoing ration treatment would preclude you from laser therapy at this time. If you have any concerns; always consult your doctor before treatment. How many treatments are needed? Generally, only one session is all that is needed and it lasts about one hour including a consultation. However, if a client feels that a booster is needed, he/she can have one within the first 6 months (provided the person has not returned to smoking). What about weight gain? Part of the treatment includes applying the laser to pressure points to increase metabolism and suppress appetite. But one must also make lifestyle changes of healthier eating and exercise. What is the Cost? Laser is surprisingly affordable. But, because I want to make laser therapy available to everyone, I am now taking up to $100 off the price. This makes laser therapy cost about the same as one month of buying cigarettes. Where is Your Office? Since I want to make this as easy and convenient as possible I will come to your home or office, days or evenings, seven days a week. So what are you waiting for?
