Had Important Reason to Quit - a Child on the Way!

I started smoking when I was 12. Sad I know. I smoked until I was 25. When I found out I was pregnant, I needed to quit.
I had tried before, and I tried all the products on the market it seemed. Some would work for a short time, some for none at all.
Then a friend of mine suggested going to a Nicotine Anonymous meeting. I sort of scoffed because I didn't see myself in the same class as an alcoholic or a drug user. But I tried everything else and I had a big important reason to quit- a child on the way. So, I went, and it was a good fit for me. I needed the accountability and support.
As you can guess, many of my friends were smokers and it was really hard to be around them and not light up. Having a sponsor and a group really helped me get through that. Also, the 12 steps helped me address the why. Why do I smoke? I think getting at the root cause of my smoking was a real break through.
I am 10 years clean and nicotine free now. It's not easy and I still find myself at NA now and again. But it worked for me, and it probably will help me live a much longer, smoke free life.

What a great story! I admire your perseverance and your continuing to try to quit, especially when you knew you were pregnant. And by remaining smoke-free, not also is there no secondhand smoke for your child to breathe but also think of the fine example that you are setting for your child!
